Location: On Site in Columbia SCWm. Jennings Bryan Dorn Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Report to: Foreman

Salary: $47.08 to $54.08 depending on experience and training

Sick Leave/Paid Time Off: Up to 56 hours per year

General Experience:

Minimum 3 years of experience in fiber optic cable installation, including underground ductbank installation, innerduct placement (e.g., MaxCell), and fiber splicing. Experience working in commercial, municipal, or utility environments preferred.


Functional Responsibility:

Perform skilled installation and splicing of fiber optic cabling in underground ductbanks and conduit systems. Responsibilities include:

  • Installing fiber optic cables in underground ductbanks and conduit systems following project specifications and safety standards
  • Installing innerduct such as MaxCell to protect and organize fiber cables within ductbanks
  • Performing fusion and mechanical splicing of fiber optic cables with precision and quality assurance
  • Testing fiber optic cables for continuity, loss, and performance using OTDR and other test equipment
  • Reading and interpreting fiber optic installation drawings, splice schematics, and project documentation
  • Coordinating with project management and other trades to ensure timely and compliant installation
  • Maintaining clean and safe work areas, adhering to OSHA and site-specific safety protocols
  • Documenting splice locations, cable routes, and test results accurately for project records, including creating splice matrices documentation for each building
  • Troubleshooting and repairing fiber optic cable faults as needed

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED


Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in fiber optic cable installation and splicing
  • Skilled in underground ductbank construction and innerduct installation (e.g., MaxCell)
  • Proficient with fiber splicing equipment and testing tools (fusion splicer, OTDR, power meter)
  • Ability to read and interpret fiber optic drawings and splice diagrams
  • Knowledge of fiber optic cable types, connectors, and industry standards
  • Cable Prep: Ensure that cables are properly labeled and organized to minimize errors during installation
  • Familiarity with safety regulations related to underground construction and fiber optic work
  • Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments

Required:

  • OSHA 10 Certification (Construction Industry)
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to pass background checks and site access requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy cable reels and equipment safely
  • Ability to stand for 50-70% of the time
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team

Desired Certifications:

  • Fiber Optic Association (FOA) Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT)
  • Manufacturer training on fusion splicing and fiber testing equipment
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Confined Space Entry Training
  • Industry and vendor specific certifications and training (NCTI, SCTE, and BCT/E)
