Unfortunately, the hiring process at many companies feels like a black hole. You apply, wait for weeks, and never hear back—and you're left wondering why you even applied in the first place. The lack of communication reinforces self-doubt. Applying for a new role takes courage, and it's hard to muster that courage when—more often than not—your only reward is silence.

Our hiring process is different at MILVETS. We want you to know that when you apply for a role, we will review your resume and application, and you are going to hear back from us, even if we don't seem like a good fit. In fact, throughout the process we strive to make sure you never go more than seven days without hearing from us.

To be completely transparent, here's what happens when you apply for a position at MILVETS.

Applying:

When you apply for a role at MILVETS, the application goes into our application tracking software. Here, a hiring team of two to four people—people you will work closely with if you are hired for this role—will review your application.

Evaluation:

The application is then evaluated by our recruiting team based on evidence that demonstrates you have the relevant skills for the job. We also evaluate each applicant's writing and communication skills, along with their knowledge of MILVETS as a company. We realize that no candidate is flawless, so we look for candidates who excel in one or two skills, and then build teams around these people to supplement where teammates aren't as strong.

Job Fit Interview:

Once we have reviewed the initial batch of applicants, the top five to ten applicants will have a conversation about the role with the recruiting team. Here you'll be asked questions that dig into your relevant experience for this role, and you'll have a chance to evaluate whether or not MILVETS matches up with the values you want to have in an employer. If you don't make it to this step, you'll hear back from us letting you know we're passing over your application for this role.

Skills Interview:

After talking with the recruiting team, you'll go through a skills interview with the hiring manager. This is a practical evaluation to see if you have the relevant skills to succeed in the role. You won't be evaluated on skills that don't matter. If you don't make it to this step, you'll hear back from us letting you know we're passing over your application for this role. For some positions, we'll also evaluate relevant skills by administering a short exercise done outside of the interview.

Final Decision:

After the skills interview, we evaluate each candidate who made it to the skills interview, and the hiring team makes a decision. If multiple candidates meet our hiring bar, we'll select the best candidate and ask for references. If no candidates meet the hiring bar, we then solicit more candidates and repeat at step two.

Reference Checks:

During the reference check, we reach out to the references you provided to get a better idea of what it's like to work with you. Lastly, we promise that we will never reach out to your existing employer without your permission.

Offer:

Once references are complete, we'll make an offer to you including details about salary, benefits and other relevant compensation details. Hopefully you'll accept the offer and we can start working out a start date and onboarding plan.

At each point in this process, we promise not to go silent on you. We strive to never go more than seven days without letting you know the status of your application.

Position Overview: MILVETS is seeking a highly skilled Cyber Security Engineer with mid to senior-level experience to join our mission-driven cybersecurity team supporting Department of Defense (DoD) systems. This position plays a critical role in identifying vulnerabilities, strengthening security posture, supporting Risk Management Framework (RMF) processes, and ensuring systems comply with DoD cybersecurity policies and standards. This role requires strong technical, analytical, and documentation skills to support system accreditation efforts, vulnerability assessments, policy enforcement, and incident response within highly secure environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Monitor networks and systems for security breaches and respond to security incidents
Conduct regular vulnerability assessments and compliance audits across systems and enclaves
Perform security assessments using both passive and active evaluation methods to identify deviations from acceptable configurations, enclave policies, and security standards
Develop, enforce, and maintain cybersecurity policies and procedures in accordance with DoD guidelines (e.g., NIST SP 800-53, NIST SP 800-37, NISPOM, DCID 6-3)
Support RMF Certification & Accreditation activities, including:
- Security Test & Evaluation (ST&E) preparation and execution
- Security Plan development and maintenance
- Plan of Action & Milestones (POA&M) tracking and updates
Conduct threat analysis, risk assessments, and research emerging technologies for potential vulnerabilities and improvements
Assist with incident response, investigation, and corrective actions tracking
Educate and guide users on security best practices and compliance expectations
Maintain compliance with DoD 8570.01-M, including required certifications and continuing education

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field
5+ years of relevant experience in cybersecurity, particularly within DoD environments
3–5 years of demonstrated experience:
- Performing system/network assessments to identify security risks and configuration deviations in accordance with NIST SP 800-53 and RMF processes
- Assessing security controls across technical, operational, and management domains in alignment with NIST SP 800-37
2+ years developing and maintaining Information Assurance (IA) documentation
2+ years of technology research and risk analysis to identify vulnerabilities and recommend mitigations
Experience supporting system accreditation and security compliance activities
Strong understanding of government cybersecurity policies and risk-based frameworks

Certification & Clearance Requirements:

Must possess a DoD Secret clearance with the ability to get TS within a year
Must have an Information Assurance Technician (IAT) Level II certification (e.g., CompTIA Security+, CCNA Security, GSEC) at time of hire
Must maintain certification and continuing education per DoD 8570.01-M requirements throughout employment

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience supporting DoD cybersecurity efforts for simulation or training environments
Familiarity with STIGs, RMF toolsets, and security automation platforms
Strong communication and documentation skills for IA artifacts, POA&Ms, and security plans
Experience supporting secure software or hardware development cycles
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in high-security, mission-focused environments

Clearance:

Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; an Active United States Department of Defense Secret clearance with the ability to get TS within a year is required
